Cirque Du Chaser

The team behind the ABC TV series CNNNN and The Chaser Decides will be making their live performance debut at Sydney’s the Big Laugh Comedy Festival.

Cirque du Chaser opens at the Seymour Centre (Downstairs Theatre) on 8 March and will be feature Andrew Hansen, Dominic Knight, Chas Licciardello, Julian Morrow and Today Today’s Craig Reucassel and Chris Taylor.

“The show actually has nothing to do with Cirque du Soleil”, said Chas Licciardello. “It’s just a convention of comedy shows to have a title that involves a fairly laboured pun on the name of the performer, and we’re trying to fit in.”

“We certainly won’t be doing amazing acrobatics or have high production values. But it will be incredibly pretentious and ridiculously over-priced, so there’s a link there I guess.”

The Chaser’s stage show has already been warmly received. "Simply brilliant," Sydney Morning Herald reporter Rebecca Harrington said after watching a rehearsal. "Cirque du Chaser is the funniest show I've seen since I was invented for publicity purposes."

The Chaser began as a fortnightly satirical newspaper in 1999 and is now published online at www.chaser.com.au. The team has also gone on to recycle material in a number of other media such as books (The Chaser Annual), radio shows (Chris Taylor and Craig Reucassel host Triple J’s drive show) and television series. After 2004, the team has two Logies: a silver one for Most Outstanding Comedy (tied with Kath & Kim) and a gold one, which they stole from Rove.

“The Chaser is now a satirical media empire which rivals Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp in all fields except power, influence, popularity and profitability,” said Julian Morrow, “so the move into small-scale live theatre is a logical one for us.”

The team plans to deal with the transition to live stage performance by using the same technique that made their TV shows so popular. "We're getting Kath & Kim to do a show immediately before ours" said Morrow.
