Laughing Stock Presents DAVID QUIRK – NEANDERTHAL BROW‘Blunt’, ‘brazen’ and ‘brilliant’ are adjectives critics have used to describe Melbourne-based stand up comedian, writer and performer, David Quirk At the 2010 festival, Quirk reinterprets his 2009 Melbourne Fringe show, Neanderthal Brow, an absorbing hour of dry observational comedy, and what The Age described as ‘a chainsaw with cheekbones’, which certainly works best as a metaphor. With comics like Felicity Ward, David Quirk stands at the vanguard of the new wave of ‘car-accident comedy’- honest and frank, painfully funny storytellers. Quirk’s material travels between the profane and profound, often finding comedy in our darkest moments, and ultimately questioning what is appropriate to laugh at, as audiences indulge their guilty smiles. The Age described David’s work as ‘bleeding edge comedy that questions the whole point of comedy itself". In 2008 he was nominated for the Golden Gibbo Award for his show ‘Kathleen Grace,’ and later that year he went to China, but that has nothing to do with this. Quirk recently toured the UK, and has been a fixture on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival road show since 2008. After nearly, but not quite winning some awards, the 2010 MICF sees Quirk perform his solo show Neanderthal Brow, but he will also write and perform, alongside comic Sam Simmons, in their Moosehead awarded comedic play, "The Incident". 'Move over, sunshine comedians, Quirk is the winter solstice of whimsy.'
